Kentucky-Indiana All-Stars girls (Game one)

Kentucky pulled off the upset in the girls’ game of the Kentucky-Indiana All-Star series on Saturday night at Knights Hall.

The two teams will meet again in Indianapolis at 5 p.m. on Saturday.

But first here are some thoughts from the opening game of the series (Kentucky won the game 64-57):

• Sure, there were two McDonald’s All-Americans on the floor for the girls’ game but it was clear that Kentucky Miss Basketball Sara Hammond was the best player on the court for this night. Hammond, a Louisville signee, played well throughout and took over down the stretch. She finished with 21 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots. Hammond scored on a hook shot, several putbacks, a three-pointer and a couple of jumpers. She also had a massive block on Indiana Miss Basketball Bria Goss - a Kentucky signee and McDonald’s All-American – with less than 1:00 left in the game to seal it.

• Hammond is going to fit in and be a star in the Big East with her size, strength and work ethic. Talked with several people surrounding the All-Stars and they said she has been one of the best leaders the Kentucky side has ever seen. She’s going to be fun to watch over the course of the next four years.

• Goss, who is from Indianapolis Ben Davis, didn’t have her best night but she’s a big-time player and will step in and play right away at UK. She was 7 of 21 and had 23 points and didn’t take the ball to the basket as hard as she did in the McDonald’s game but the Kentucky defense did have something to do with that on this night. It’s going to be fun to see Goss in Matthew Mitchell’s system at UK.

• Biggest surprise of the game to me was Indiana’s Courtney Larson of Columbus North. The Miami of Ohio signee had 10 points, five rebounds and four assists and always seemed to be there making the big play for the Hoosiers.

• Some might have said the play of Sheldon Clark’s Carla Booth was a surprise for Kentucky but not me. I knew she was already a big-time player. What a steal for Eastern Kentucky. She’s a hard-nosed kid with great court awareness, an excellent touch from outside and she has such a competitive nature. She hit a big three-pointer late and made the play of the night on a behind-the-back pass to Hammond in transition.

• The three Louisville girls were just solid. Mechael Guess of Manual had six points and six rebounds, Maddie Peabody of Sacred Heart had two points, two assists and two steals and Mercy’s Juliann Miller had four points, including two clutch free throws. Good kids and good, solid players.

• Western Kentucky signee Danay Fothergill of Pulaski Southwestern was just 1 of 7 on the night but she’s going to be a nice role player for Mary Taylor Cowles at Western Kentucky. She’s fearless and has a great pedigree.

• Hammond was the only player on the Kentucky roster with more than two made field goals but 11 of 12 players on the roster scored and the Bluegrass stars won the second-chance battle 18-2. Kentucky picked up nearly every loose ball and just won the hustle stats, which turned into a win on the scoreboard.
